ESP8266 support on a Pi-Top?

I'm not sure whether to post this here or in an Arduino forum, but thought I'd start here.

Has anyone had success getting the Arduino IDE talking to a Huzzah ESP8266 WiFi board using a Pi-Top? I've tried installing, downloading and building several drivers, but none work. I either get load errors (invalid or missing symbol) on loading, or missing libraries when trying to build.

I'm using an RPi 3 running Linux Pi-Top GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie)  V4.8.50-v7+ #1035 on a 16GB SD micro card.

Thanks!

Never mind. I managed to establish communications as user "pi". I had been trying to make that work as another user. What confused me is that the board shoed up as /dev/ttyUSB0. I had expected to see the ESP nomenclature somewhere in the name. My bad...
